Stuart Schultz

This is my home on the web. I founded Gradspot.com, recently launched DermTV.com, advise start-ups, program websites, and love few things in life more than building stuff. You can follow everything I do here on stuartschultz.com, or certain things on twitter, and other things on facebook.

Easiest Way to Claim Your Name on the Net

Tumblr.

No. I’m not a company spokesman, but I did see the magic happen overnight.

You see… I’ve owned stuartschultz.com for years, and have had some misc content up there (my resume, links to current projects, etcetera). Nonetheless, the other Stuart Schultz’s of the world always took precedence in any google search for “Stuart Schultz.”

There’s the friendly gyno, Stuart G. Schultz, MD. There’s the Stuart Schultz at Merrill Lynch. And we can’t forget, my cousin, Owen Schultz, who happens to practice law in Stuart, Florida, who also comes up. Amongst other. But not Stuart Schultz (me).

Then I created a tumblog with the URL of stuartschultz.com and voila, I’m number three in the search listings, literally overnight. Considering I work in an industry where people are most likely to Google me before doing business, getting an opportunity to put my best foot forward (if you consider this blog my best foot) is important. And it took little to no effort.

The reason that this works doesn’t actually have much to do with Tumblr. It’s insteal all about Google juice. Google gives higher precedence to sites/networks that it trusts. All I did was launch my URL (stuartschultz.com) on one of those networks that it trusts (Tumblr). By the transitive property of the Google algorithm, stuartschultz.com got some of Tumblr’s Google juice and voila. Really, this should work with LinkedIn, Facebook, and others (hence when you probably type your own name into Google you’ll find some Facebook and LinkedIn results).

Nonetheless, if you need to claim your identiy with Google, just start a blog with a recognized network or a profile on a trusted service.
