If you know me, you know that I’m a huge fan of “the cloud.” All of my email is hosted at google (I use Google Apps), as well as my calendar and address book. I even recently started using Dropbox as a hosted fileserver solution for my business. But then a friend (CWD) forwarded this TechCrunch article to me this morning — Online Backup Company Carbonite Loses Customers’ Data, Blames And Sues Suppliers — and it reminded me about the importance of redudancy/backup.
I’m not suggesting that the cloud is bad, but I do hope that this is a sobering reminder about the fact that even the cloud isn’t safe. Hard drives die. Trucks drive into server farms. Always backup your data. A 2Tb harddrive runs about $200 (max) at this point. Aren’t your digital photos, videos, music, and files worth a lot more?
